Proverbs 22 – Out of Bounds

“Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.”

Proverbs‬ ‭22:28‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I don’t watch a lot of sports. I play even less sports than I watch. However I understand the basic premise of “out of bounds” areas. Most every game has them. They have a field of play where the game is allowed to occur. And they have everywhere else. I mean what would it look like for a baseball team to skip 2nd plate to get to 3rd or or home faster? Chaotic. They player has to stay on the line and run from base to base.

Andy Sochor makes some excellent points on this topic. He identifies the origins of this command, one that is routed in Deuteronomy. Then he points out that the book of Job speaks to the logic behind not removing boundary stones. Cheaty neighbors might steal some of your flock because your animals are out of your boundaries and into “theirs.”

If you take the time to read Sochor’s article, I can tell you I do agree with what he says there. Where the Bible context focuses on practicality:“if boundary lines get moved, people can then claim your property,” Sochor moves into the realm of spiritual application. If we allow boundary stones to be moved, specifically seeking spiritual guidance outside the Bible, sheep are going to get taken. We might be led astray.

I do believe additional helps actually support a healthy spiritual life, as long as they conform to the Bible and basic teachings thereof.
