Proverbs 18 – I Know Just How you feel…

“To answer before listening— that is folly and shame.”

Proverbs‬ ‭18:13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Have you ever started sharing something personal to some one, they jump in with some sort of quip that appears to be empathetic in nature? “I know just how you feel!” And then they go one about their experiences and such.

Did you find it helpful or comforting? No?

Well perhaps what we need is to stop and listen. Sometimes people don’t want or need to hear our story, or even our perspective on the troubles of their life. Sometimes they just need to talk and share. When we rush in with what we want to say, it can tell the other person “I actually care more about what I have to say than to listen to you.”

Let’s stop and listen. If you feel like interjecting something may be helpful, ask the person for permission to share it. “Would you mind if I share something from my own story that I think might help?”

I know it’s a lot of work, but it can and does show the person you value them more than you value what you think you can do for them.
